Hi Everyone
It is Summer Music Carnival time! Mark your calendar, 3:30 pm on Saturday, June 12th for musical games outdoors (weather permitting) or indoors if it rains. All followed with a pot luck supper at 5 pm. The whole family is invited - Mom, Dad and siblings. RSVP by Thursday June 10th, so I can plan for the numbers for supper. I will supply coffee, tea, water, punch.......
Come and test your skill at skipping to the beat of a metronome, musical hopscotch, trampoline fun, other music games, and have your face painted by Shoo Shoo.

SUMMER TRAINING
In summer, many kids lose all interest in piano practise. This is normal. Most people need a break after studying hard for 9 months! However, after a break, students may be encouraged to explore on their piano, review favourite pieces or find new pieces from last year's music book. On a rainy day, this is something to try, or to stay cool on one of the hottest days if you can't get to the beach. Performing for a friend or relative may be helpful in keeping interest up at the piano.

Hi Everyone
Spring and April are almost over. Reminder for parents of returning students to bring your Registration forms and cheque to lesson this week as the deadline for Early Bird Registrations is 30 April 2010. The forms were handed out in class last week. If you have other children that you would like to register in fall classes, please contact me soon as I am starting to get calls from parents not in the program as yet.
I have injured my knee and am on crutches but classes will continue. I am just a little slower at getting up and down these last few days.
Private students and MBIII are preparing for their piano exams in June and the MBIII class is also working towards the Theory Exam in May.

Hi Everyone
Spring break starts next week and the studio is closed for the first week only. If you have planned a vacation in the second week, let me know so that I can make plans to cover the missed lesson materials. I will send the homework by email for those who are away.
This week is the last of Birthday and Irish month.
Thank you to the SBII's for being available for Shaw Cable's Marjorie Greaves to video a class. The 30 sec. spots will focus on MYC music classes and the 30th Birthday of the program.

Hi Everyone
This is Irish Week so try to wear something green to class. We will be continuing to play Happy Birthday from memory and add some composer birthdays to our chart. Look up the birthday of your favourite composer to add at your next two classes.
Parents remember spring break starts Monday, March 29th and the studio will only be closed for the first week and classes will resume the week of April 5th. If you will be away on vacation, please let me know so I will plan the lessons for those in class and those who will be away.

Hi Everyone
The Music House Studio raised $51.26 for the MYC International "Pennies for Practice" - a fundraiser for the Provincial Firefighters Burn Fund in honour of MYC's 30th birthday. MYC Kanata will match our donation so the Burn Fund will receive $102.52 for all that practising. Way to go, all you music students and parents and supporters! Our donation weighs 23 pounds - about the same as the 10 Kg bag of white sugar. I will build some muscles carrying that to the bank.
The 30th Birthday Party was a success and Janice Klassen and I enjoyed hearing the piano songs, and making music with the group. We did bell ensembles, singing ensembles, kazoo ensembles, and an Orff poem with 3 ostinato accompaniments. Birthday cake and punch finished our party.

Please bring your pennies collected for the MYC International "Pennies for Practice" - a fundraiser for the Provincial Firefighters Burn Fund in honour of MYC's 30th birthday. MYC Kanata will match, up to $10,000.00, the donations collected in each studio.
Please bring all your donations by March 3rd. At that time I will arrange to present the donations to the local Firefighters.
The compositions have been mailed to Kanata. Great work everyone!

As your child gets older, let him/her assume more of the responsibility for practising. Some children see their parents as interfering and prefer to be left alone to practise the keyboard material. Make the teacher aware if you are concerned about this situation.

Hi Everyone
This is the last week for the MYC International "Pennies for Practice" - a fundraiser for the Provincial Firefighters Burn Fund in honour of MYC's 30th birthday. MYC Kanata will match, up to $10,000.00, the donations collected internationally in each studio. It will end on Friday Februay 26th.
On the ladder chart we will write in the number of minutes you practise each day and collect a penny a minute from sponsors like Mom & Dad or other relatives and friends. A Penny Jar will be set up in the Studio for each weeks donations. Please bring all your donations by March 3rd. At that time I will arrange to present the donations to the local Firefighters.
The good copy and rough copy of your compositions must be handed in this week. The mailing deadline for them to reach MYC Kanata on time is February 25th. What a great job of composition writing from everyone in the studio.
Everyone performed so well at the recital and thank you to all that helped make it a success - parents, students, the audience, Jane and Sharon for the reception, and the Klassens for the set up and take down.
I have tickets for the May Ling Kwok piano Concert, February 27th. Price is $20 adults/seniors and $12 students. Tickets are also available at the door.

**Instead of playing the keyboard piece 5x, sing it 1x, and play it 4x.
**Instead of clapping the rhythm ensemble (E page), step it, drum it, "meow" it, copy it with goodie bag pieces, ring a bell, play the rhythm with one key of the keyboard.
**Instead of playing "This is C . . ." 5x the same way, play i like a dinosaur stompin. . . like a robin hopping . . .like a dog barking . . like a boot caught in the mud . . .like a trampoline . . .hands wide apart . . .hands crossed!!!!!

Hi Everyone
MYC International has started "Pennies for Practice" - a fundraiser for the Provincial Firefighters Burn Fund in honour of MYC's 30th birthday. MYC Kanata will match, up to $10,000.00, the donations collected internationally in each studio. It will run for four weeks in February. On the ladder chart we will write in the number of minutes you practise each day and collect a penny a minute from sponsors like Mom & Dad or other relatives and friends. A Penny Jar will be set up in the Studio for each weeks donations.
We are into week five of our composing and this week I will be listening to all the rough drafts that will be handed in at lessons. Looking forward to playing every one's song and I will correct any writing errors (bar lines, rests, stem direction etc.
It is two weeks until the recital and every one's pieces are sounding better and better. Great practising, and don't forget to practise your performance announcing and bows and "how to be a great audience".

We are into week four of our composing and this week we will be choosing Dynamics, Tempo, Articulation (Touches), and Title to add to the bass accompaniment that was last week's homework. Looking forward to playing every one's song in class.
We have chosen our recital songs for the February 12th Recital and are practising our performance announcing and bows and "how to be a great audience".
I have tickets for the May Ling Kwok piano Concert, February 27th. Price is $20 adults/seniors and $12 students.

Hi Everyone
We are into week three of our composing and this week we will be choosing notes for the Bass accompaniment to add to the melody that was last week's homework. Looking forward to playing every one's melody in class.
We have chosen our recital songs for the February 12th Recital (with some fine tuning of choices this week) and hopefully one will be a Valentine song and the other song one of your child's favourites.
Janice is starting a Sunrise Class on January 18th, Mondays, at 10 am in the upstairs studio and there are a couple of spaces left. If you know of any 3 or 4 year olds who would be interested in a pre-piano class with parent, please let Janice or I know. Other time slots will be available if there is sufficient interest and registration.

What a struggle - these dark mornings make one want to curl up in bed with a good book. However we are into week two of our composing and this week we will be choosing notes for the Treble rhythm that was last week's homework. Looking forward to clapping every one's rhythms in class.
We are starting off 2010 with choosing recital songs for the February 12th Recital and hopefully one will be a Valentine song and the other song one of your child's favourites.
If you know of any families with children ages birth to four, there are openings for Music Pups - Tiger Collection (Mon. 9am, or Wed or Fri 1 pm) and MYC Sunrise Classes (Mon. or Thurs. 1 pm)

Hi Everyone
Carolling in CR with co-operative weather - clear, cold - no rain, sleet, snow and howling winds. This was the best ever and we gave pleasure to a number of households in the block around the studio. Great singing by everyone and playing the bells too. We returned to the house for hot chocolate, mulled apple cider and goodies.
Our practising raised 10 grocery bags of food for the local Food Bank and was donated on December 31st. We are starting off 2010 with choosing recital songs for the February Recital and will start to compose a song for the Interational Composition Contest.

How is your December practising doing - raising lots of food for the CR Food Bank??? Bring the food donations to the studio as you collect them and place them under the Studio Christmas Tree. Lets see how large a pile of non-perishable food we can make!
A photo of the music students around the tree with the food donations will be taken on December 18th at the Christmas Family Carolling. The food will be donated to the CR Food Bank on Dec. 30th.
Please RSVP with the numbers attending, for the Family Carolling by December 11th, so I may finish the planning and organize the supplies for our party.
We are continuing our preparation of favourite Christmas Songs to play and sing for the up-coming festive season. Please mark your calendar for our Family Carolling on Dec. 18th 6:30 pm - 9 pm. After carolling on Ash Street, we will return to the studio for games, singing, food and hot chocolate.

There are a possible 18 day of practise before the Christmas Break. Ask parents, friends, relatives and neighbours to sponsor you with an item of food for your practises. Five practises a week is our regular goal - who can do six or seven in the next 18 days????

Hi Everyone
Well, it is still raining and while we are not experiencing flooding in our yard we definitely feel very soggy! I hope everyone is ok with no flooded basements etc like those in Courtenay and the Cowichan Valley. When it is too wet outside to play, make friends with your piano!
Was anyone able to attend the Canadian Music Week Celebration at the Presbyterian Church put on by the North Island Registered Music Teachers? There were local students playing Canadian Music Friday night and Saturday morning and a workshop for teachers was held Saturday afternoon. The art contest entries have been sent to MYC head office in Kanata, Ontario.
We are starting our preparation of favourite Christmas Songs to play and sing for the up-coming festive season. Please mark your calendar for our Family Carolling on Dec. 18th 6:30 pm - 9 pm. After carolling on Ash Street, we will return to the studio for games, singing, food and hot chocolate.

Hi Everyone
Well, I still have my cough and it is officially pneumonia and I am on antibiotics. I discussed it thoroughly with my doctor and will be teaching this week (but had to give up singing lesson, gymnastics, skating, pilates, housework, yardwork, cooking etc.) to get lots of rest between classes. My friend gave me a book to read, and there is lots of skating on TV which are good incentives to get me to rest!
Remember to bring in your artwork this week, if your child is entering the Design a Sticker Contest. I will be mailing the entries Friday morning, November 20th. Any entries after that date would need to be sent priority post by the parent to make the deadline to Kanata, Ontario.

So how was Catch Up/Review Week? Let me know at class if you were able to accomplish something that was difficult or how you caught up and finished a half learned piece. If you practised 5Xs each week you are eligible for two stamps (or 7Xs for a star).
We had a great trip, weather was mostly good for duration. Especially enjoyed our time with baby Autumn and the rest of the family. She is beautiful of course, tiny, and very happy. Spent lots of time cuddling her.

All students are invited to dress in costume, and to play, sing, or play and sing a Halloween Song for your disguised fellow students. We will be doing group activities - singing, or rhythm ensembles, or Halloween craft or....other age appropriate spooky stuff!! Parents please provide a Halloween treat to share - veggies, cookies etc. If parents have any concerns, please contact me. Are there any allergies to be prepared for????

The studio has set up with extra kleenex boxes, hand sanitizers, and wipes for cleaning the keys. Everyone has been very vigilant with hand washing and staying home when ill. Here are some other thoughts on flu control. I am sure they apply to many virus and bacteria situations.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a h healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method
- Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot to clean nasal cavities, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*
- *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C(Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption
- *Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm

Hi Everyone
We have a new grand baby - it's a girl! Autumn arrived October 15th at 4:35 am. Mother Michelle and baby are well - Daddy Alex said he was tired from being up All Night. Autumn weighs 7 lbs 5 oz and is 19 and 1/4 " long.
So, Catch Up/Review Week will be November 2 to 6th for all of my classes, private lessons and Music Pups. The week will count for X5 and X7 practises, and I am a Star performances.

Hasn't it been a great Thanksgiving weekend. Hope you were able to earn an "I am a Star" by playing a song for your family and guests. No word yet on the baby's arrival - still due October 10th but ...... I am encouraging all the students and parents to continue practising during that time. It will count towards the minimum 5 days a week practise plan and the Star chart if you do 7. I recommend you use the time for catch up and review of skills. I do not know how much notice I can give but I will do my best to give you the most heads-up I can.
Music Pups has started and there are some spaces in all classes - Mondays at 9 am, Wednesdays at 1 pm and Fridays at 1 pm. Please let any friends with children aged birth to four know about these classes. Thanks. This is a great music and movement class for children accompanied by their parent, babysitter, or other relative.

Week five of MYC classes and private lessons has started - and we are getting closer to the due date of my daughter-in-law who is expecting her first baby - October 10th. I am sure you remember that we started one week early this year so that I could take a week's holiday and go and help her the first week she is home from the hospital. I am encouraging all the students and parents to continue practising during that time. It will count towards the minimum 5 days a week practise plan and the Star chart if you do 7. Week five of MYC classes and private lessons has started - and we are getting closer to the due date of my daughter-in-law who is expecting her first baby - October 10th. I am sure you remember that we started one week early this year so that I could take a week's holiday and go and help her the first week she is home from the hospital. I am encouraging all the students and parents to continue practising during that time. It will count towards the minimum 5 days a week practise plan and the Star chart if you do 7. I recommend you use the time for catch up and review of skills. I do not know how much notice I can give but I will do my best to give you the most heads-up I can.
Music Pups has started and there are some spaces in all classes - Mondays at 9 am, Wednesdays at 1 pm and Fridays at 1 pm. Please let any friends with children aged birth to four know about these classes. Thanks. This is a great music and movement class for children accompanied by their parent, babysitter, or other relative.
The studio is still undergoing repairs - but North Island Restoration will be finishing up this week with the touch-up painting.

Week four of MYC classes and private lessons has started - one month of lessons almost over! If any parents and students have been on holidays and are still planning to come to class or lessons, please contact me as soon as possible to arrange make up classes if needed or to reserve your spot for private lessons.
Music Pups is happening this week, September 21st, Mondays at 9 am, September 23rd, Wednesdays at 1 pm and September 25th, Fridays at 1 pm. This is a great music and movement class for children aged birth to four years accompanied by their parent, babysitter, or other relative. I have some spaces left - on a first come basis.
The studio is still undergoing repairs - but things are coming together nicely. With being away at the MYC Conference, nothing new has happened on my part. However, the renovation team is planning to finish up by Friday of this week. Here's hoping!
I won the big prize at the Conference - a Yamaha keyboard donated by Tom Lee Music of Nanaimo! I purchased my usual strip of tickets (10 for $5.00) and have been surprised and bemused ever since! It will be perfect for the small studio downstairs. The presentations were great - The Musical Brain by Tara Gaertner, Joe Beraducci on Grade 1 repetoire, The Magic, Mystery and Accomplishment; Heather Webster-MacLeod with Movement in Your Classes, Anita Stushnoff and Lummi Sticks in Your Classes, and much more. AND I rode the longest zip line in Canada - down the hill and across the lake!

The natural inclination of a child is to play the game, not to practise the skills. No matter how much your child enjoys music, s/he will likely balk at practising at some time or other. We all know the feeling of not wanting to do something we know must be done! It takes self-discipline on the parent's part to make the child understand that daily practise WILL occur without exception. It is amazing how establishing this one rule, right from the outset of lessons, can help in eliminating many of the disagreeable aspects of daily practising.

Welcome to the start of the Music Year. Lessons start this week for MYC Piano and Private Piano. The studio is a work in progress - but it is almost done. We are missing the cabinets and sinks in the galley kitchen and bathroom. I have purchased hand sanitizer as an interim measure. Moving days - what can I say - except that it is still on going. Bookshelves for the piano music are to be delivered today. The back is definitely talking back to me!!!
I am extending the "no food or drink in the studios and waiting areas" to the newly renovated downstairs space. This rule has worked very well this past year for the upstairs studio - no accidental spills or crumbs where we sit and make music.

Try some favourite pieces, or some scales, or sing and play a little, or try a new song! To all the new students and parents, don't worry about reviewing or practising, fun piano times are ahead.

Hi Everyone
Here we are in the middle of this wonderfully hot summer! Where has the time gone? Summer Music Holidays are half over. This is a special year in that the studio is starting earlier than normal - the week of August 31st. If your piano has had a lonely summer, it is time to make friends with it again. Try some favourite pieces, or some scales, or sing and play a little, or try a new song!
The flood damage is in the process of being repaired. The studio has been emptied, flooring stripped where damaged, cupboards removed etc. The tile floor in the hallway and bathroom was completed today. Laminate to replace the old linoleum is next. Once all the repairs have been completed, the studio will need to be set up again - can you hear my back groaning???
The booth at the Children's Festival was extremely busy with many children and parents visiting. The children were fascinated with the Suzuki Floor Keyboard and invented many "modern" tunes on it. The rhythm instruments also held their interest. Both Janice and I had fun but were worn out by the end of the day!
